Michael Durrant was the opening keynote speaker at a conference of educators in New Zealand.
The 5th annual conference of the New Zealand RTLB Association (Resource Teachers - Learning and Behaviour) was held in Christchurch.
Over 500 of these specialist teacher/ consultants, along with other educators and school administrative personnel came together for four days under the theme "In the middle ... on the edge" - a phrase which so aptly describes the position in which specialist teachers and consultants often find themselves!
In his opening keynote address on Thursday morning, Michael challenged delegates to embrace the "radical simplicity" of an approach to students that focuses on strengths rather than seeking to "get to the bottom" of the learning or behaviour problem.
On Saturday morning, more than 200 delegates chose Michael's second presentation, in which he showed a videotaped interview with an unmotivated, not-very-verbal student demonstrating the use of Solution-focused questions to develop some kind of way forward with the student.
