Many organisations embrace Solution-Focused and/or "strengths-based" principles in their work with clients. "Strengths-based" has become the most popular description of current approaches. This course explores the implications of this thinking for supervising, coaching and managing staff. What might it mean to use the same philosophy and process in supervision and leadership? If we are serious about trying to treat our staff in a way that is consistent with how we treat our clients, what difference might this actually make?
The course will draw upon Solution-Focused principles AND from the broader literature about "best practice" in supervision and leadership. Participants will gain practical methods for working with staff in ways that enhance their sense of competence and effectiveness.
A framework for supervisory and leadership conversations will be offered and its use in a variety of contexts explored — including using "strengths-based" conversations in potential disciplinary situations — as well as coaching conversations that help staff see a way forward.
The course will consider:
- How to build a strong "supervisory (or management) alliance".
- How to have conversations which encourage staff to reflect on their work in a way that uncovers new ideas and builds hope.
- Focussing supervision and leadership towards successes and how this can assist staff to discover new ways forward with their more challenging work situations.
- The role of supervisor as consultant rather than teacher.
- The importance of considering our own assumptions about the supervision/leadership process and how these will shape our leadership practice.
- An overview of current supervision and management literature and how this knowledge translates into best practice in the human services sector.
- How strengths-based supervision is about much more than just "being positive" and still considers the realities of child protection risk and other legal and ethical imperatives.
- A new way of thinking about leadership
Michael Durrant has presented versions of this training for a number of agencies, including training on strengths-based approaches to recruitment, clinical supervision and "performance counselling" to managers and supervisors at UnitingCare Burnside (Sydney), supervisors in Human Services (Vic), all supervisors at Centacare Wollongong, and elsewhere. Michael was engaged to train psychology supervisors for the (then) NSW Psychologists Registration Board and is now an Approved Supervisor for the Psychology Board of Australia. He has presented to the University of Sydney Coaching and Mentoring Alumni and to other events for coaches. This training course routinely attracts audiences of 50-plus in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, New Zealand.
